Good Things To Do In Chicago This Week (11/12/18)

Here are a few things I might get up to…

Nov. 12

Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers with Lucy Dacus (Concert)

Cost = ~$35
What: Event Page // The new indie supergroup “boygenius” consists of all three musicians listed on the bill for this show — Baker, Bridgers and Dacus. Both this Monday show and the Tuesday show got sold out, but you can still find plenty of tickets from resellers.
When: 6:30 PM
Where: Thalia Hall, Pilsen, 1807 S Allport St.
Why: Any of the three would be worth watching in their own right, but all of them together makes this a show you should really try to get to. Maybe I’ll finally master how to play Bridgers’ “Funeral” on guitar before the show.

Nov. 13

Susan Orlean: “The Library Book” (Book Talk)

Cost = Free
What: Event Page // Orlean’s new book re=examines a 1986 fire that wiped out much of the Los Angeles Public Library. Orlean has been one of America’s most famous magazine writers over the last couple decades — most notably for her work with The New Yorker. Meryl Streep played Orlean in the movie “Adaptation.”
When: 6 PM – 7:30 PM
Where: Harold Washington Library Center, The Loop, 400 S State St.
Why: I listened to Orlean’s interview with NPR’s “Bullseye” back  in October and found the talk interesting. I imagine seeing her live would be worthwhile.

Nov. 14

Study Hall Chicago Meet-Up

Cost = Free
What: Study Hall organizes writers across the world in a popular listserv. This Chicago meet-up will essentially be local writers hanging out to talk about writing.
When: 6 PM
Where: The Rabbit Hole, Old Town, 1208 N Wells St.
Why: A good way to meet other young writers in the city.

Nov. 15

Launch of “Loop: The Elevated Card Game”

Cost = Free
What: Event Page //Transit Tees makes Chicago-themed apparel and gifts, often focusing on the CTA. This new card game works kind of like Uno and has tons of Chicago references.
When: 6 PM – 9 PM
Where: Transit Tees, Wicker Park, 1371 N Milwaukee Ave.
Why: A locally made card game all about Chicago might make a good holiday gift. This launch will have tacos and beer too.

Nov. 16

ZooLights & Christkindlmarket

Cost = Free
What: Zoo Lights Event Page and Christkindlemarket Event Page // The Christmas season very much begins with the launch of these two huge Chicago events. Basically, the Lincoln Park Zoo gets covered in lights and hosts events // Daley Plaza gets a German-themed holiday market.
When: Varying hours through the season
Where: Lincoln Park Zoo and Daley Plaza respectively.
Why: Giant spectacles like these are like free happiness. Just wander in and have your mood improve.

Nov. 17

Bulls v. Raptors (Basketball Game)

Cost = Varies
What: The Bulls face the Toronto Raptors, a team with one of the best NBA players in the league right now — Kawhi Leonard.
When: 7 PM
Where: United Center, Near West Side, 1901 W Madison St.
Why: The Bulls won’t win many games this year, while the Raptors might be the best team in the NBA. But take that chance to see Leonard play.

Nov. 18

Sunday Salon Chicago (Book Talk)

Cost = Free
What: Event Page // Will Boast, Dina Elenbogen, Rebecca Makkai and Jeremy T. Wilson will all be reading.
When: 7 PM – 8 PM
Where: The Reveler, Roscoe Village, 3403 N Damen Ave.
Why: Makkai’s book “The Great Believers” earned a nomination for the National Book Awards this year. I haven’t started it yet, but am going to try to binge it before attending this talk next Sunday.
